A Bit of History About the Making of Orange Tree Boxes

The first orange tree boxes were invented in the 17th century at Versailles by André Le Nôtre, gardener to Louis XIV. Exotic fruits such as oranges, lemons, and dates were fashionable at the court of the Sun King, but their transport from distant production areas was often unreliable. The trees were therefore brought directly to Versailles, and due to the harsh winters there, these plants required the construction of greenhouses where they could find shelter from November to April.

Tired of planting and replanting these trees twice a year in open ground, André Le Nôtre came up with the idea of a portable box in which the plant could remain permanently.

Because of the frequent handling and the heavy loads, orange tree boxes at the time had to offer great strength.

The design of our containers today offers unmatched strength and durability: removable panels, indestructible galvanized steel frames and reinforcements.

Why choose an
orange tree box for your plants?

Unlike planting in the ground, an orange tree box protects your plants from extreme weather conditions, whether it's the winter cold or excessive summer heat.

Thanks to its design with removable sides, an orange tree box allows for easy maintenance, especially when it comes to trimming the roots or replacing the soil to ensure optimal plant growth.

Orange tree boxes are designed to be easily moved, allowing you to reorganize your garden according to the seasons or weather conditions. This is especially useful for fragile plants or those sensitive to frost.

By offering a limited but sufficient space for the roots, an orange tree box allows the plant to grow without being overwhelmed by overly spread roots, contributing to healthy and balanced growth.

Inspired by historical designs, orange tree boxes add a touch of refinement to your garden, terrace, or patio. Their sleek design and quality craftsmanship bring an additional aesthetic dimension to your outdoor space.

Tips and advice from your expertin premium planters in Seine-Maritime (76)

To ensure the durability of your orangerie planters and the health of your plants, here are some practical tips and advice to follow:

Preparation and installation of your exotic wood planters

in Seine-Maritime (76)

1. Ensure that the feet of your planters rest on a hard and stable surface. For models with frames (starting from 65x65 cm), place a metal plate or flat stone under each foot to prevent sinking into soft ground.

2. Place a layer of clay balls (4 to 7 cm) at the bottom of your planter to promote good drainage, along with a planting felt sheet to separate the soil from the drainage material.

Wood maintenance for your custom orangerie planters

in Seine-Maritime (76)

1. Apply a special exotic wood saturator or varnish once a year to preserve the natural appearance of the wood and prevent micro-cracks caused by climate variations.

2. Regularly clean the wood with a soft brush to avoid the buildup of dirt and mold.

Plant care in your wooden decorative planters

in Seine-Maritime (76)

1. Choose the size of the planter based on the plant. A planter that is too small can limit root growth and affect the plant's health, while a planter that is too large can make soil maintenance difficult.

2. Regularly check the condition of the roots. If you notice that the plant is starting to weaken, it’s time to trim the roots and renew the soil to provide your plant with new nutrients.

Winter protection for your custom artisan planters

in Seine-Maritime (76)

Depending on your region's climate, protect your orangerie planters during the winter. Mediterranean plants like orange trees and lemon trees should be sheltered from severe frost. You can move them into a shelter or greenhouse, or use appropriate winter protections.
